Gipsy Danger is a Mark-3 American Jaeger. It was one of the oldest Jaegers in active combat until its destruction in 2025.
History[]
Early Combat History[]
Launched on July 10, 2017, Gipsy Danger was stationed at the Anchorage Shatterdome and tasked to defend the coastline of Alaska.[3] Piloted by the Becket brothers Yancy and Raleigh, Gipsy Danger's first kill was against the Category III Kaiju Yamarashi in Los Angeles later that year. By the year 2020, Gipsy Danger was accredited with four Kaiju kills over the span of four years.[note 1]
Anchorage Attack[]
In 2020, Gipsy Danger is deployed into the Gulf of Alaska to fight the Category III Kaiju Knifehead. The Jaeger approaches the Kaiju's present target, the Saltchuck, from underwater and emerges in time to save the fishing boat from certain destruction, with its pilots disobeying Marshal Stacker Pentecost's order to ignore it.
With the Saltchuck out of the way, Gipsy Danger lands a right and left uppercut to Knifehead's face, knocking the Kaiju off-balance. Raising its arms, the Jaeger lands a blow on the Kaiju's head and knocks the creature underwater. Knifehead retaliates by lunging forward and catching the Gipsy Danger's left wrist in its jaws. However, Gipsy Danger shoves the Kaiju backwards and grabs the side of its head. The Becket brothers activate Gipsy Danger's right-arm plasma cannon and shoot Knifehead three times in the abdomen. Knifehead falls into the sea, presumed dead by the pilots.[3]
Their victory, however, is short-lived. The injured Kaiju re-emerges from the ocean and ambushes the Jaeger while its pilots are distracted. Yancy attempts to hold Knifehead back while Raleigh preps the left-arm plasma cannon, but before he can fire it, Knifehead pierces the Jaeger's left armpit with the sharp edge of its nose and completely severs Gipsy Danger's left arm from its body. Overpowering Gipsy Danger, Knifehead then breaches the right side of the Conn-Pod and tears away the right half of Gipsy Danger's head, killing Yancy.[3]
As Knifehead grapples with Gipsy Danger, Raleigh, straining with the effort of operating the Jaeger by himself, charges and fires Gipsy Danger's right-arm plasma cannon into the Kaiju's face at point-blank range, killing Knifehead once and for all. Following Knifehead's death, Raleigh is able to pilot Gipsy Danger long enough to reach the shores of Anchorage, where the Jaeger ultimately falls.[3]
Decommission and Restoration[]
Following its pyrrhic victory against Knifehead, Gipsy Danger is salvaged from the shores of Anchorage and sent to Oblivion Bay. During the lull of Kaiju attacks in 2023, Stacker Pentecost goes against the Pan Pacific Defense Corps's desire to junk the Mark-3 Jaeger and relocates it to the Anchorage Shatterdome. When reporter Naomi Sokolov arrives at the Anchorage Shatterdome to interview Pentecost, Gipsy Danger is in the process of being of airlifted to the Hong Kong Shatterdome.[note 2][4]
The Mark III Restoration Program is sanctioned by Pentecost and over the next two years, Gipsy Danger undergoes major reconstruction and refurbishment under the supervision of J-Tech officers Mako Mori and Tendo Choi. The Jaeger also receives new cockpit updates to its control interfaces to match recent tech upgrades made by the PPDC and is outfitted with retractable chain swords on both wrists.[3]
When the United Nations officially cuts funding to the Jaeger Program in 2024, Gipsy Danger is prepped for its last mission alongside Cherno Alpha, Crimson Typhoon, and Striker Eureka to destroy the Breach. Raleigh Becket is later recruited by Pentecost to return as one of Gipsy Danger's pilots and is eventually paired with Mako as his co-pilot when the two of them prove to be drift-compatible with each other.[3]
Hong Kong Incident[]
During the Double Event on January 8, 2025, Gipsy Danger is the last Jaeger to arrive on the scene in Victoria Harbour and saves Striker Eureka from certain destruction at the hands of the Category IV Kaiju Leatherback. Gipsy Danger engages Leatherback, drawing its attention away from the disabled Jaeger and its pilots, Herc and Chuck Hansen, and tears the Kaiju's EMP organ from its body. In response, Leatherback tackles Gipsy Danger and throws the Jaeger across the harbor and into the port.[3]
Gipsy Danger fights to keep Leatherback from breaching the port any further and is able to gain the upper hand against the Kaiju without much trouble. After disorientating Leatherback by landing a series of crushing blows to its face, Gipsy Danger shoves a shipping container into the Kaiju's mouth and grapples with the creature from behind. Enraged, Leatherback charges Gipsy Danger and attempts to push the Jaeger back towards the water, prompting its pilots to free Gipsy Danger's right arm and activate the Jaeger's right-arm plasma cannon.
Locked in a power struggle, Gipsy Danger fires away at Leatherback, severing the Kaiju's left arm from its body and killing the creature with several shots to its left side. Unsure if Leatherback is actually dead, Raleigh and Mako decide to "check for a pulse" by unloading another volley of shots into the Kaiju's body. Once the Kaiju's death is confirmed, Gipsy Danger heads into the city to find the the Kaiju Otachi and arms itself with an oil tanker.[3]
Gipsy Danger fights Otachi with the tanker until the Kaiju tears the ship from the Jaeger's grasp and tosses it aside. Lashing out with its barbed tail, Otachi uses the city's skyscrapers to evade detection. During its search for Otachi, Gipsy Danger is ambushed by the Kaiju from the side and smashed through several adjacent buildings. Otachi spits a stream of acid at the Jaeger, but Gipsy Danger dodges the attack and attempts to rip the Kaiju's acid sack out of its mouth. When Otachi attempts to crush Gipsy Danger's head with its tail in retaliation, Mako uses the coolant from Gipsy Danger's ventilation system to freeze the Kaiju's tail and shatter it into pieces.[3]
Gipsy Danger tears out Otachi's acid sack and tosses it away. Enraged, Otachi forces the Jaeger onto the ground and unfurls its wings, taking off with Gipsy Danger in tow. After several unsuccessful attempts at freeing themselves, Mako and Raleigh engage Gipsy Danger's right chain sword and cut Otachi in half when the Kaiju carries them up into the atmosphere. Although this sends Gipsy Danger into freefall at 50,000 feet, the Jaeger is able to land safety in a stadium when its pilots loosen its shock absorbers on Pentecost's instructions and purge its nuclear reactor to significantly slow its descent.[3]
Operation Pitfall[]
After the Rangers regroup, Gipsy Danger and Striker Eureka, now piloted by Chuck and Pentecost, are taken to the Marianas Trench to assault the Breach. The two Jaegers are cut off by the arrival of Raiju, Scunner and Slattern. Scunner and Raiju separate the two Jaegers and Gipsy Danger fights Scunner after the Kaiju ambushes it from the darkness. Gipsy Danger overpowers Scunner in a contest of strength and prepares to kill it with its right chain sword, but loses its chance when its right arm is torn off by Raiju.
Scunner uses Gipsy Danger's momentary vulnerability to its advantage and tears at its leg. In retaliation, Gipsy Danger stabs Scunner in the head with its left chain sword and shoves the Kaiju's head into a nearby volcanic pit. Screeching in pain, Scunner breaks away from Gipsy Danger, allowing Raiju to charge the Jaeger a second time. In response, Gipsy Danger uses the Kaiju's own speed against it and successfully cuts Raiju clean in half.[3]
After being overpowered by Striker Eureka, Slattern calls for Scunner's help, giving Gipsy Danger momentary reprieve. Raleigh and Mako attempt to help Striker Eureka, but Pentecost warns them to stay away and orders them to use Gipsy Danger's nuclear reactor to destroy the Breach instead. With no other way to win, Chuck and Pentecost self-detonate the thermonuclear warhead strapped on Striker Eureka's back in an attempt to kill the last two Kaiju and buy enough time for Raleigh and Mako to pass through the Breach with Raiju's carcass.
As the bomb goes off, Gipsy Danger crouches low to the ground and braces itself with its remaining chain sword to withstand the explosion wave, which parts the sea and creates an air bubble. As the water rushes back, the Jaeger is swamped by turbulent water. Mako and Raleigh recover, but not without sustaining heavy damage to Gipsy Danger's operating systems.[3]
With the other two Kaiju no longer in the way, Gipsy Danger grabs Raiju's corpse and limps for the portal. The Jaeger is momentarily halted by Slattern, who somehow survived the explosion with grievous wounds. With no way around Slattern, Gipsy Danger tackles the Kaiju and stabs it in the back, sending them both careening over the edge. As they fall towards the Breach, Slattern slashes at Gipsy Danger's backside and manages to cut the oxygen supply to Mako's drivesuit. Raleigh retaliates by firing Gipsy Danger's nuclear vortex turbine at point-blank range, burning through Slattern's internal organs and finally killing the Kaiju for good.[3]
Upon arriving in the Anteverse, Mako's life support systems begin to fail, prompting Raleigh to eject her from the Jaeger and finish the mission on his own. He manually arms Gipsy's nuclear reactor to self-destruct and moves to escape in his own pod with only seconds left to spare. The Precursors watch as Gipsy Danger descends down toward them and explodes, destroying the Kaiju creation facility and sealing off the Breach for good.[3]
Features[]
Physical Appearance[]
Gipsy Danger's appearance, faded blue paint job, and romanticized decal invokes the visual design of fighter aircraft like Vought F4U Corsair from the World War II era.[1] Its body language echos Raleigh, but is largely its own.[1] Because Gipsy Danger's head is detachable from its body, large flaps stem from its shoulders to protect the back of its head and the base of the neck where the Jaeger's body connects with its Conn-Pod.[1]
Armament[]
Gipsy Danger's 08FS/Oceanic Cooling vents maintain temperature and channel seawater through the Jaeger's circulatory coolant system. Its 98BD/Hyper-Torque Drives allow Gipsy Danger's muscle strands increased locomotion. Gipsy's Nuclear Vortex Turbine maintains health checks and returned radio chemical readings in excess of safety parameters. The turbine can also be utilized to fire a directed heat blast powerful enough to burn completely through the hide of a Kaiju when activated at point blank range.
Equalizing the Jaeger's movement are 10KT/Gyro-Stabilizers, which allow for smooth bipedal motion and stabilize aggressor feud. Gipsy Danger also features two rear jets which allow for an increase in forwarding movement for a limited amount of time. They can be used to aid in the Jaeger's ability to leap into the air, quickly decreasing the distance between it and a Kaiju to land a melee attack.
For each hand, Gipsy Danger possesses an I-19 Plasmacaster, a particle dispersal cannon that fires plasma via a charged carrier rail and is able to both wound and cauterize Kaiju anatomy, preventing the spread of Kaiju Blue. It also has two retractable GD6 Chain Swords created from a steel-obsidian alloy, which were personally outfitted by Mako Mori.[1] These Chain Swords can be used as solid blades or whips.[1] In addition to those features, Gipsy Danger is able to dump much of its coolant as an improvised weapon and possesses a rocket for increased punching power inside its right elbow.
In the aftermath of its partial destruction, Gipsy Danger's systems are updated to the standards of modern Jaeger technology.[1] However, as result of its age, its suspension is looser and its parts move more than that of the latest Jaeger models, making it more vulnerable to melee attacks.[1] Like all Mark-3 Jaegers, Gipsy Danger is powered by a nuclear reactor located in the center of its chest, which makes it resilient to EMP-based attacks.[5] Gipsy Danger's reactor can also be armed to self-destruct, presumably as a last resort against a Kaiju when all other options to kill it have been exhausted.[3]

Controversy[]
Given Name[]
In the original screenplay for Pacific Rim, Gipsy Danger's key signifier and namesake was the image of a pinup decal featuring a "buxom Gipsy riding a bomb". Respectively, its pilots, Raleigh Antrobus and Mako Mori, were referred to as "Roma 1" or "Roma 2"[7], "Roma" being the colloquial term for the Romani people.[8]
However, prior and shortly after the film's release July 12, 2013, information slowly began to circulate among fans that the etymology behind the term "Gipsy" was in fact pejorative.[9] "Gipsy" is the British spelling of the word "Gypsy"[10]. The term, and the casual reference to a theft, "Gypped"[11], is an ethnic slur used to refer to the Romani people.[12]
When Beacham was contacted on the matter of part of the name's definition on his twitter account, he claimed that he named Gipsy Danger after the pre-World War II aircraft engine, de Havilland Gipsy, designed by Frank Halford.[13] He apologized, saying that his knowledge of the term's definition was "context-specific" and that he was unfamiliar with the pejorative use and promised to "be more careful" in future.[14]
In an effort to avoid offending and using the slur, some fans of the film have taken to referring to Gipsy Danger as "Lady Danger"[15][16][17][18], "de Havilland Danger"[19] or merely "Danger"[9] and "G Danger".[20] However, "Gipsy Danger" is still the preferred term to when discussing the Jaeger in general.
Trivia[]
- Gipsy Danger's "body language" was inspired by prized UFC fighter Georges St-Pierre.[1]
- According to Guillermo del Toro, the design team wanted Gipsy Danger to "feel like a classic, old gunslinger" (John Wayne) and designed its anatomy after that of a cowboy. del Toro also referenced tanker ships and art deco as an influence in Gipsy Danger's design. In particular, there were large flat areas with a lot of plating, with spots in between showing the intricacies of its inner workings.
- Gipsy Danger has the "no power moves" glitch in Pacific Rim: Jaeger Combat Simulator.
- Gipsy Danger's Plasma Cannon appears to be modeled from a real-life particle accelerator or practical plasma system. When charged, one can see the caster generating several high-energy electromagnetic fields to create and eject streams of directed plasma energy.
- Gipsy Danger's Plasma Cannon is called the "Plasmacaster" in Pacific Rim external media.
- Gipsy Danger is a playable character in the Pacific Rim: The Video Game.
- A 7" Gipsy Danger figure is part of Series One of NECA's Pacific Rim collectible figures, with a battle-damaged version being released as part of Series Two.
- Gipsy Danger is the only Jaeger featured in almost every NECA series other than "Series Three".
- Gipsy Danger makes a cameo appearance in the Guillermo del Toro directed couch-gag for the Simpsons Halloween special, "Treehouse of Horror XXIV".[21]
- NECA's tagline for Gipsy Danger is "The Steel Titan".[22]
- Gipsy Danger's Conn-Pod rotates 360 degrees when connecting with the main body.[3]
- On the Control panel of Raleigh's Drivesuit harness in Gipsy Danger, the words "Yoyodyne Propulsion Systems Inc" are written. A reference to the company in the movie Buckaroo Banzai.
- A twitter post from Travis Beacham shows that 1 kilogram was defined as the mass of 1 litre (dm^3) of Osmium in 1803 of Pacific Rim Universe.[23]
