Merrit[2][3] is the captain of the fishing vessel, the Saltchuck.

Biography

When the Saltchuck is caught in a storm on the Miracle Mile outside Alaska, Merrit and his first mate, McTighe, attempt to find shelter from the rough waters on a nearby island.

Merrit mistakes Knifehead, approaching their ship underwater, for a for an island. However, as McTighe begins to monitor the rapidly closing distance between the Saltchuck and the "island", Merrit realizes that the island is in fact a Kaiju.

He orders the ship to turn away from the Kaiju, however, Knifehead emerges from the water and prepares to attack the ship. When Gipsy Danger arrives, the Jaeger lifts the ship from the water and moves it out of immediate danger. However, the Merrit and his crew are still caught in the fight between the Kaiju and the Jaeger.

When Gipsy Danger loses it's left arm, the crew narrowly misses being crushed when it lands in the water. After Gipsy Danger defeats Knifehead, the surviving pilot, Raleigh Becket, overhears radio chatter that confirms the survival of the Saltchuck.[3]
