Newt Gotlieb is the name of an scrapped character from the Pacific Rim draft script.[1]

Development[]

Overview[]

Newt Gotlieb is a supporting character in the original draft. In his introduction, Newt is described as a lanky thirty-three-year-old man with brown hair, wearing headphones with an impish grin and "geekishly cute in his own way". He works at an observatory in Lima, Peru as an assistant to a man named Myron Toynbee.[1]

While the character was reworked into two characters, Hermann Gottlieb and Newton Geiszler, in the final version of Pacific Rim, much of the early production news reported for Pacific Rim referred to Newton Geiszler as "Newt Gotileb".[2][3]

Role[]

As a supporting character in the Felicity Kincaid subplot of the script, he is largely disconnected from the central narrative revolving around Raleigh Antrobus and Mako Mori's fraught relationship to trusting partnership as the pilots of Gipsy Danger.[1]

He helps Felicity, a journalist in the search for answers about the origins of the Kaiju and the Interstice, the portal that allows the Kaiju to enter their dimension from the Anteverse, initially acting as anonymous source for information. When she meets him face to face, Newt and Toynbee suggest seeking out Ivo Czerny, a scientist who worked for the Combined Special Defense Corps, before he was exiled to Australia.[1]

The script implies a romantic relationship buds between Newt and Felicity following their escape from a Kaiju attack thwarted by Puma Real. Nothing comes of it until the final act of the script. While Felicity is the one who Drifts with the Kaiju brain secured by Ivo Czerny, Newt comes up with the solution to destroy the Interstice after discovering information in Czerny's office that reveled the bridge could be destroyed with heavy ordnance.[1]
